HIV, Nurses’ and Doctors’ Strike in Zimbabwe

The doctors and nurses in the Zimbabwe's public health sector have gone on strike, again! These health professionals have decided on work stoppage to force their employer to improve their conditions of service, in terms of their remuneration, fringe packages and conditions at work. .

No squeeze on senior housing in city

Baraboo may have its share of growth problems, but apparently a lack of affordable housing for elderly and disabled residents is not one of them.

A scheduled meeting Tuesday to discuss a possible new senior housing development in Baraboo was called off by city officials because they felt it was not necessary to provide additional residences.

"At this point, we don't see a need for it," said Pat Hamilton, president of the Baraboo Community Development Agency. "Our (resident) age is high, we expect to be losing people."

Hamilton said there are spaces available in two apartment complexes run by the agency — Corson Square and Donahue Terrace — as well as similar facilities in the city.

She said the CDA has 101 apartments for low-income elderly and disabled residents between the two buildings, and said it has been about five years since there was a waiting list or a problem with a lack of space.

Collier constuction concludes

Construction workers finished modification of Collier Library on January 26 and repaired and improved the windows, the columns, the floors and the restrooms for the building to have better building structure, appearance, energy efficiency, protection and convenience. The repairing plan has started around July of 2005, said a director of facilities Michael Gautney, and the request of the construction was submitted by UNA in order to fix up the "weathertight integrity" mostly for the southwest walls of the building. It was supposed to be completed by late November or early December, but unexpected troubles delayed the process.

Celia Reynolds, a reference services coordinator at Collier Library, said that there were several reasons why the construction was delayed. She said that it took longer time to attach new windows to the wall; some supplies didn't fit in the predetermined places, so the library had to return them and reorder the new ones; and new places were also found that should be repaired.

Student Accessibility Service assists Kent

Junior biology major Matt Potokar doesn't have too much difficulty getting into buildings. All it takes is the click of a button from a remote control on his wheelchair.

"It opens up all the handicap doors," Potokar said. "That's pretty cool."

Laura McGlothlin, accessibility coordinator for Student Accessibility Services, which provided Potokar's controller, said she thinks Kent State has one of the most accessible campuses around.

"I think we have one of the most outstanding programs in the United States, and if you ask people that, they'll probably agree," she said. "Kent State is known for its disability services, for the ease of getting through the program, working with our office. We make it very easy for students."

McGlothlin said the most common accommodations people receive are extended times for exams, the ability to take exams in a reduced distraction environment and the ability to tape record class lectures.

Schools hold party, pep rally

On Friday afternoon, tiny feet shuffled across the floor and hands waived in the air, all while a music video made about 15 years before many of the students were born played in the background.

"Actually, some of my staff were even too young to remember the Super Bowl Shuffle," said Dianne Bielinski, principal of the Pioneer Grove Education Center in Frankfort.
