Springdale Rotary Leads Efforts to Support Wheelchair Foundation

SPRINGDALE -- The three-minute video begins with scenes of children scooting down hallways on their bottoms, inching along on their elbows and crawling through sand.It goes on to show a grown man carried through the streets and an elderly woman isolated in her bed. All are Third World people who have lost the use of their legs. The first time he saw the video, Noel Morris leaned over to his wife and whispered, "Can I use your handkerchief?""I'm using it," Sandy Morris replied. The two were attending the 2002 Rotary International Convention in Barcelona, Spain. Noel Morris was incoming president of the Springdale Rotary Club. He'd had his agenda for the year mapped out, but seeing the Wheelchair Foundation video gave him a new focus. The goal of the foundation is to provide wheelchairs for the estimated 100 million people in developing countries who need them.Morris invited foundation spokesman Chris Lewis, son of entertainer Jerry Lewis, to visit the Springdale club.

Parking should be free for all

Councillor David Barrick has proposed removing Port's parking meters, and introducing two-hour enforced parking. But why not remove the meters, and let it go at that?

Metered parking in Port Colborne is not a matter of traffic flow. Evidence of this was seen during December's Christmas shopping season when the meters were covered. It was no more difficult to find a parking spot on the street, than it is any other month of the year.

It is ridiculous to think motorists can park free on the lot opposite City Hall, yet only the width of a sidewalk and a curb separates them from on-street metered parking.

Often when a driver leaves his parking space, another will take his place and benefit from the time remaining on the meter. And many drivers park without feeding the meters to make a quick stop at a store.

Mounting problems force The Shelter for Abused Women to seek new site

WINCHESTER — Narrow stairways, cramped quarters, and lack of kitchen space are among the difficulties the residents at The Shelter for Abused Women deal with on a daily basis.

To remedy the situation, the shelter’s board of directors is looking for a new site, Executive Director Donna Carpenter said.

The rooms in the shelter recently received a fresh coat of paint. But paint can’t cover up the lack of space. .

DISABLED SAG ACTIVIST SENTENCED FOR POSSESSION OF CHILD PORN

A New York actor who had actively campaigned to pressure the film and TV industry to hire the disabled has been sentenced to 44 months in prison for possession of child pornography. Ed Jupp, 51, a wheelchair-bound victim of cerebral palsy who had appeared in such films as Born on the Fourth of July and A Beautiful Mind as well as Law and Order, NYPD Blue and other TV shows, had pleaded guilty to charges that he had amassed a large collection of child pornography, including hundreds of photographs and 45 videos, on his home computers between 2002 and 2005 and that he had used peer-to-peer programs to share the collection online. In 2003 New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, signing a bill providing a taxi service for New Yorkers who use wheelchairs, singled out Jupp, who had pushed for the legislation.
